Some thoughts on this post: 1) Marshmallows remain a key clue, somehow. Gus has mentioned them in several posts on this site. 2) Friendly Jerome / pirates. Has anyone tried to explore this motif? The number 10, found in CT, was a Jolly Roger flag. Are there other pirate symbols we should be trying to make sense of? The square-rigger ship in the tub on Floor 8, the macaw on Floor 10? Is there a pirate map with an "X marks the spot" built into the illustrations? What about Gus' sketchbook and the pirate story in the opening pages? 3) The word "haunts". Gus says, "Perhaps the thief is a ghost" in the text that goes with Floor 12. I wonder whether we are meant to pursue this. The gas cloud on Floor 2 looks a bit like a fluffy ghost lying on its back (or like the Stay Puft Marshmallow man - aha! - perhaps a Ghostbusters allusion, uniting the marshmallows and the ghosts in one theme).
Sailor- Great observations and ponderings. The story of the Khroniker includes it being stolen from Friendly Jerome by assassins. Dooley stresses this three times in the first video, which also includes the headlines about JFK being assassinated.
Perhaps Friendly Jerome was assassinated by these assassins when they stole the clock (why would they be called assassins unless they assassinated someone?). And now Jerome haunts the clock - and possibly he reclaimed the #12 for himself in his restless otherworldly wanderings.
So what does this have to do with marshmallows, and where would a ghost hide the #12 - In a bowl of Lucky Charms or Marshmallow Mateys?
William- I share your frustration with this hunt...there is no way to verify an idea without driving or flying across the country, and that's out of reach to most of us. There is nothing in the book that says, yes! this is it. I have found things that can suggest no less than 23 states for the 9th floor. So much for two dead ends.
I'm not ready to give up on ideas, but I've pretty much written off the possibility of getting the 12 for myself. The two most obvious Xs I see is the 4 corners that you mention and a place in Kansas where an X lands if you draw lines from WA to FL and CA to ME
I'm thinking of a parody where Gus Skyliner meets Ham Bowlo, who pilots a spacecraft called the Malt-O-meal Falcon on a desperate mission to help rebel princess Marshmallow escape from her Empire captors, clones and clones of Milk Troopers, led by the cocoa puff lord Darth Soggy. His moon-sized space station, the Bad-Breath-Star is rumored to be capable of shooting a beam of bad breath so powerful it can destroy entire planets.
sailor, Edward Teach could be another piriate motif He was a The infamous Blackbeard who resided on the coast of the " Graveyard of the atlantic" in present day NC
Thought for the day: The first 11 numbers from the Khroniker hold clues that will help us to find the 12. It seems as if Gus was more actively engaged in helping us to find the six than he is now, and that makes me think that perhaps it was necessary to find the six before we could move on. 1 - a face, head or bust with a vague look of an Asian deity http://gustwintig.com/news/2010/9/7/full-of-bacon-still-hungry-for-emeralds.html I have shared my "over head" theory in the past. Could there be other meanings? 2 - a bird. There is a bird on the 10th Floor. Any others? 3 - three stalks of wheat tied with a rope. There are decorative grasses in the vases flanking Pupkin's door. Rope dangles from 13 to 12. 4 - compass. The four-headed seraphim sculpture on Floor 13 seems to allude to the cardinal directions, but maybe this refers to the map of successful dig sites? Navigation in general? 5 - eye and modified pyramid Lots of eyes throughout the book. Lately I've wondered whether the framed pink eye artwork in Manzarak's apartment hides a pink donut. 6 - Belt buckle. http://gustwintig.com/news/2010/11/8/in-your-quiet-home.html There are visible buckles on Floors 13, 12 and 5. 7 - Wreath and fleur de lis 8 - Sunburst 9 - Sign on a branch 10 - Jolly Roger pirate flag 11 - Twin twigs?
Anyone see a pattern of any kind, or an allusion to something in the book that suddenly seems more important?
It seems that my server lost its connection so I have to rewrite my post. Apologies if two similar posts appear.
Nice work, Sailor. I have some theories on the remaining numbers:
7 - don't know about the wreath but fleur de lis & G'Rnp are both French. 8 - there is a sun on Munari's pillowcase. 9 - maybe a stretch, but Floor 8 features a swing hanging from a broomstick. 10 - stumped, but the crossed bones might refer to "X marks the spot".
I like your "twin twigs" and Manzarek's donut eye. It really does look like that.

I wish the print was larger on that "Taste Guarantee." I'd like to know what kind of taste guarantee might be attached to such a product.
My kid-pirate-hunter-toddler-sleuth Sonoma can help you banish those marshmallows. She is highly skilled at picking the charmies out of the fodder.
Using coupons or are you planning to use the ol'fashioned 5-finger discount?

I don't mind being called out on Tenn
I've been working
How is it that you guy's look at the toy clock
and not see that the 6 and 5 have reversed geo's
do yall remember in early post from Gus about the non-clue/anti-clue
Gus didn't just come back
he came back because someone hit close to home
I was the first to point out the four corners/colorado
anybody can look and see a GREAT BIG X sitting there on the us map
I went back to Tenn just to clear the site off of my radar
both TN and IDAHO show up in floor 9
TANG/Gemini
two personalities/two sites/two dead ends
geomec's all have corners except the circle
so hate on haters
and until yall can think out side the box you may never see
the 12
as for me I'm out
gas at 3.50 a gallon x how many miles
short on time nothing is a day trip outside 400 miles
plus nobody has a clue to the value of said 12
1000 dollars?
10,000 how bout 250,000 like the spider from A TREASURE TROVE
I might travel 10 days to get something of real value
and I'm not putting anything down
it's hard to find something that's fun to do
and puts your mind to a test
so, THANKS to the clock without a face
and i'll still be reading the post and i'll add my 2 cents when i can
come APRIL 1st it will have been a year since this hunt began
and like FOOL'S we ran up and down the highways looking for numbers buried in the ground
so laugh and say we had a good time on the road
William-
